As you may be aware, Windows® 2000 Server reaches end of life on 13th July, 2010, and will go out of support on that date.
What are the risks?
Customers who remain on this platform will be running their organisations on servers with an operating system no longer supported with security hotfixes, patches or service packs. This presents a potential data security vulnerability, but it also means additional difficulties, including possible customer data loss and liability, non-conformity to regulatory compliance and less reliability for mission-critical IT resources.
What are your options?
1. Do nothing, just accept the risk of having no security patches and no problem resolution support for these products running in your environment.
2. Upgrade your existing environment - Click here for operating systems to which Windows 2000 Server's roles can be migrated directly. Windows Server 2008 R2 will be supported until 2018 and offers many advantages including increased security and manageability.
Reminder!
SQL Server 2005 SP2 support ended on January 12th, 2010. From that date onwards, Microsoft no longer supports or provides free security updates. If you haven't already upgraded, these are your options:
a. For SQL Server 2000 SP3a, the options are to upgrade to SQL Server 2000 SP4 which will be supported until 9th April 2013 or to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 which will be supported until 8th January 2019.
b. For SQL Server 2005 SP2 servers, the options are to either upgrade to the to the next SQL Server 2005 Service Pack, SP3 or to upgrade to SQL Server 2008.
