Datapac enables growth and mobility at Thorntons Recycling with Office 365

Thorntons Recycling was founded in 1979 and is a fully integrated waste management and recycling company. It is one of the most successful Irish recycling businesses, having recovered 87.75% of the 350,000 tonnes of material sorted at its facilities in 2013. Thorntons operates a number of recycling and recovery facilities in Dublin, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow, and operates a fleet of more than 100 trucks. The business has been experiencing significant growth over the last two years, increasing its employee numbers by 50% from 240 in early 2012 to 360 at present. Its customer base encompasses domestic households and the public and private sectors, with annual sales in excess of €40M.
Thorntons needed to replace its ageing onsite Microsoft Exchange server as it no longer had the capacity to support its expanding employee base. The business wanted a reliable system that would not only guarantee round-the-clock connectivity but also enable mobile and flexible working.
Thorntons’ mobile workforce includes its teams operating its fleet of trucks as well as its environmental scientists and engineers who operate across its multiple locations ensuring compliance with licences, permits and national regulations. Also, employees in other roles and departments needed access to business information while away from their desks.
To guarantee all employees can remain connected while out of the office, the company sought a solution that would securely support mobility and deliver a consistent high quality experience at all times.
Following consultation with Datapac, who provide managed services for Thorntons’ entire IT infrastructure, it decided the best option was for Datapac to implement Office 365 for all of its employees. Microsoft Office 365 brings together cloud versions of Microsoft’s most trusted communications and collaboration products with the latest version of its desktop suite.
With a rapidly growing business, Thornton’s now has a system that can keep pace with its expanding operations and is delivering multiple benefits. Employees are also being delivered seamless remote access to email through Exchange Online. They can securely access e-mail, documents, contacts, and calendars from anywhere and on any device. This now also includes iPads, as Microsoft recently announced that the Office 365 application can now be installed on these devices.
Regardless of how employees choose to access their Office applications, whether on a PC or using their smartphone from a truck on the road or at one of Thorntons’ recycling centres, they will have the same consistent, high quality experience.
All employees have faster access to information and significantly improved connectivity ensuring they can deliver the highest levels of customer service and improve response times to both commercial and domestic customers.
Nicole Fitzgerald added, “The solution implemented by Datapac is expected to deliver significant cost savings for us. We were faced with the decision to either go for a cloud based solution or invest in a new on premise system. Office 365 provides us with all of the benefits of a traditional server without the upfront capital expenditure and the additional maintenance and subsequent upgrade costs. The pay-as-you go subscription model was also a deciding factor for us as we have clear visibility over costs and can easily add new employees as they come on board.”
Delivering future benefits
Initially Thorntons implemented Office 365 to deliver a cloud based email service but it is now looking to take advantage of the full Office 365 suite. This will enable employees to use Microsoft SharePoint and Lync for improved collaboration and enhanced productivity through remote access to documents, audio and video conferencing and advanced messaging services. With Microsoft Lync, Thorntons can instantly and easily connect its people across Dublin, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow and improve timely decision making.
Datapac is proactively monitoring Office 365 for Thorntons as part of its wider infrastructure management service.
