WannaCry Ransomware – Update from Datapac

Over the past number of days, a new form of Ransomware called WannaCry has been spreading rapidly across the globe. This attack infects PCs via a phishing email and then once a host becomes compromised, the attack spreads across the Local Network connections via Worm malware. This vulnerability can be resolved with a recent patch from Microsoft (MS17-010).

On networks where the Microsoft MS17-010 patch has not been applied, WannaCry can spread across your entire network very quickly. Datapac’s strong recommendation is to patch all servers and PCs in your business as a matter of urgency. In the meantime, please advise users to be extremely careful when opening email. If users are not sure about the authenticity of the email, advise them not to open it and to contact the sender to verify the authenticity of the email.

Datapac also recommend the following:

    • Ensure that your users are aware of the threat and that they are extremely vigilant in opening emails. Ideally, do not access email or the internet until MS17-010 has been deployed.
    • Where possible update Windows immediately. This will deploy MS17-010.
    • Ensure that desktop anti-malware solutions are deployed to all devices and that they are up to date.
    • Check your backups are running successfully and that you have a recent copy of your backup in an offsite location. If your network becomes infected, this will be vital for recover your data.
    • Contact your Datapac Account Manager or our Support Centre on 1850 247826 or support@datapac.com if you require further assistance.
