Datapac, Ireland’s leading technology solutions and services provider, today announces the delivery of comprehensive server technology infrastructure to Thorntons Recycling. This new integrated and highly agile solution will futureproof operations for Thorntons Recycling, enabling it to accelerate its business development and company growth.

Founded in 1979, Thorntons Recycling is a family run waste management and recycling business. Operating from 10 locations, the Dublin-based company has over 250 employees and a fleet of more than 180 vehicles servicing households and businesses in Dublin, Wicklow, Meath and Kildare.

Operating in a highly competitive environment, Thorntons Recycling is on a rapid growth trajectory, which has in part been driven by acquisitions in the space. The company recognised the need for a more powerful IT infrastructure capable of supporting this growth and developing at pace. Datapac, a long-term and trusted ICT advisor, worked closely with Thorntons Recycling to design and deliver a full infrastructure migration. To ensure a smooth transition for Thorntons Recycling with no disruption to day-to-day operations, Datapac conducted this migration work out-of-hours.

Infrastructure availability and uptime is a key concern for Thorntons Recycling and Datapac implemented a revamped and modernised SAN storage solution underpinned by best-in-class Nimble SAN storage from HPE. This boasts an industry-leading six-nines (99.9999%) of uptime availability which has reduced infrastructure downtime and enhanced business application availability. The technology has increased organisation-wide productivity and everyday tasks are streamlined with quick and secure access to applications and files. In turn, the solution is driving value for Thorntons Recycling’s customers with enhanced service delivery.

As part of its acquisition-driven growth strategy, Thorntons Recycling must be able to quickly integrate the IT systems of newly acquired companies into its own existing infrastructure. Datapac’s futureproofed technology means this process is entirely seamless, contributing to significant time and cost savings for Thorntons Recycling. To provide cyber-resilience for the future, the highly secure solution ensures that the company operates on hardware that is supported end-to-end.

Gareth Hamilton, Finance Manager, Thorntons Recycling: “Server infrastructure is such a vital part of our IT environment that we needed to go with a partner who would take the time to fully assess our requirements and schedule implementation in a way that supports our operations. Having worked with Datapac on a number of significant projects in the past, they were the obvious choice.

“The new infrastructure is a night-and-day difference. Server downtime is a thing of the past for us; now we can focus on delivering high-quality services to all our customers.”

Gavin Downey, Senior Systems Engineer, Datapac: It’s encouraging to see a company like Thorntons Recycling fully embrace and prepare for the future with this infrastructural overhaul. With a new, future-proofed SAN technology platform at the heart of its IT ecosystem, the company is able to enhance its own service delivery to customers. Server integrity is something which cannot be overlooked; poor performance can hinder productivity through server outages and the cumulative impact of slow and unresponsive systems.

“With this resilient, scalable and secure infrastructure in place, it gives Thorntons Recycling the platform and confidence to continue to grow and develop the business.”
