On 24th March 2025, Datapac welcomed a group of transition year students from Comeragh College in Tipperary to its headquarters in Enniscorthy for a day designed to give them a genuine look at what a career in the technology sector can look like.
The visit was aimed specifically at secondary school girls, with the goal of encouraging more young women to consider the wide range of opportunities available in tech.
Hearing from the people who work here
The centrepiece of the day was a series of career talks from our team members spanning technical roles, sales, marketing, administration and more. Speakers shared their own stories of how they came to work in the technology sector, and it is fair to say those stories were varied.
Some followed what many students might consider the expected path: a technology-related degree followed by a move into the sector. But many did not. Some came to tech later in their careers, having built experience in completely different fields, and found that the skills they had developed along the way transferred remarkably well.
One of the clearest messages of the day was that there is no single correct route into technology, and the idea that you must follow a straight line from school to a tech degree to a tech career is simply not true. This message aligns with our belief that technology careers are for everyone, which is exemplified through our DE&I programme Pathways Inclusion Initiative.
Practical skills for the road ahead
Alongside the career talks, students took part in workshops on CV writing and interview preparation, delivered by our HR team and talent acquisition partner Intellect Talent Acquisition. These sessions gave students practical, applicable skills they can draw on as they begin thinking about life after school, regardless of which direction they choose to go.
Seeing it in action
Students also received a full tour of the Enniscorthy premises, giving them a chance to see a working technology business up close: the people, the environment and the day-to-day reality of what working in the sector actually involves.
We thoroughly enjoyed having the students with us and hope the day gave them something useful to take away, whether that is a clearer sense of direction, a bit more confidence, or simply the knowledge that the technology sector has a place for people who arrive by all kinds of different paths.
